Rowena Katherine Williamson Stephenson, 86, of Mounds, died January 6th, 2000, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Mrs. Stephenson was born June 3, 1913 in Mounds, daughter of Oscar and Roseluella Kelly Williamson.

Mrs. Stephenson was a 1931 MTHS graduate and a Southern Illinois Normal University graduate. She was an Education and Art major. Southern Illinois Normal University became a fully accredited institution as a degree-conferring teachers college in 1931, by the North Central Association. Not until 1947, did SINU change to Southern Illinois University, by legislative act.

She taught 2nd grade at Mounds Thistlewood School for 35 years, retiring in 1973, from the MTHS building, that was then a consolidated grade school. She had many hobbies; oil painting, writing poetry, gourmet cooking and gardening.

She was married to Basil Stephenson. He preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers.

Survivors include two nieces, Betty Titus of Mounds and Barbara Highsmith of Denver, CO.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at Barkett Funeral Home, with Mike Vaughn, officiating.

Burial will be Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale.
