MTHS COURTSHIP STORY
The couples' courtship began when Fred "took notice" of Helen at a pie and box supper, which was held at the old Valley Recluse School. Fred said that he was attracted to Helen's pretty, red hair. The courtship really began when Helen was
a sophomore and Fred was a junior at Mounds Township High School. Fred wrote Helen a note and asked her to attend
the Queen's ball at the Cairo Armory with him, so Helen borrowed a formal from her Sister-in-law Emma Tally, and the
young couple along with other friends from MTHS went to the dance and had a marvelous time. This event saw the start
of a "Dance through Life", because the couple has never stopped dancing to the music of the "Big Bands."
While Helen was still a senior in high school, the Japanese had made their sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, and the United
States had been drawn into World War II. Fred, who had graduated with the MTHS Class of 1941, went into the service and
wound up in the United States Air Corps. Helen graduated with the MTHS Class of 1942, and even though the war was going
strongly, the couple decided to go ahead and get married on February 6, 1943. Fred became an engineer-gunner on a
B-26 and found himself in France in the 9th Air Corps' 394th Bomb Group 587th Squadron, which came to be known as "The
Bridgebusters." On February 21, 1945, while flying on his 44th bombing mission, his plane was shot down, and he became
a prisoner of war of the Germans. Fred was lucky enough to be liberated at the end of hostilities and was able to get back
to the United States safely. In the meantime, Helen had kept the home fires burning, and the couple was able to get right
back to the establishing of a home and the raising of a family.
People of Pulaski County will remember Fred's long tenure as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Pulaski County. His wife, Helen,
worked right along with him as his assistant. The couple is now retired and enjoying every day of their retirement.
On Thursday, January 24, 2008, the Cairo Citizen published that Helen and Frederick Moyers will be celebrating their 65th
Wedding Anniversary at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Clubroom on February 2, 2008. Hosting the event will be the
Moyers' children, Emily & Nick Jeran and Brian and Ronna Moyers. Cake and punch will be served at two o'clock and visting
with friends will go on until 5:00 PM when a barbecue dinner will be served to all family and friends who can be there.
After dinner there will be a dance with music and entertainment supplied by Briron Music Productions.
