At the beginning of each school year, every fraternity and sorority would have rush parties for the purpose of recruiting new potential members for each greek organization. Each fraternity would compete against each other to recruit and sway what was considered to be the best candidates to join a fraternity.

The Phi Kappa Tau fraternity was the only fraternity on the SIU campus that had a fraternity band. This fact was stressed as one of the many reasons that a potential new member might want to decide to pledge Phi Kappa Tau instead of some other fraternity.

In the above picture you see the Four Taus providing the entertainment for a rush party.

One of the big events for each fraternity or sorority on the SIU campus was to have an annual formal. The formal usually had some kind of theme such as the Hawaiian theme you see above. This usually included a dance and was often held at the local country club. Many fraternity men and sorority women often got engaged at these events.
