1947 MTHS Queen & Her CourtHOMECOMING QUEEN IS CROWNED IN IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY AT MOUNDS TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL
Shirley Britton, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Benson Britton, was crowned Queen of Mounds Township High School in impressive ceremonies by Margaret Ann Vick, retiring queen for 1946-47.The scene of the coronation was the Mounds High School gymnasium which was beautifully decorated in the theme of "The Arabian Nights" The royal ceremony started at 10:30 PM to the musical strains of the "Shiek of Aribi." Heading this procession were Robert McAdoo and Jimmy Cornell dressed in true Arabian style as slaves to the queen.Following the slaves came the attendants and their escorts in the order of their classes. Freshmen and sophomores and escorts were Barbara Worrel and Larry Lusk, Loleen Parker and Ray Thornton, Beverly Laydon and Earl Mattson, Jr., and Billy Jean Deering and Bob Cruse. The junior candidates for queen and their escorts were Effie Cobbs and Edmond Bridewell, Jr., Margie Lackey and Robert Taylor. And Sarah Heilig and Wilbum Thornton. Immediately behind them was Margaret Ann Vick, retiring queen, and her escort, Jewell Bruce. Chosen by the students to be to the former queen and her successor.Preceding Miss Britton with the crown of black velvet and ostrich feathers fastened by a rhinestone clip in front were little Gerald File and tiny Nancy Melton, who presented the queen with a bouquet of beautiful chrysanthemums.The queen entered the gymnasium on the arm of Carl Humphrey, junior class president. She was attired in the traditional purple and gold satin cloak and train.After the ceremony the entire assembly sang the Mounds Railroaders Loyally song to the new Queen.
